Sub-Specialized Radiology

TRA Medical Imaging is the community’s source for convenient diagnostic imaging throughout the south Puget Sound. We are a local partnership of sub-specialized radiologists providing high quality, patient-centered care close to home.

Radiology is a specialty field of medicine and requires advanced physician training just like Oncology, Surgery, or Neurology. Radiologists spend an average of nine to twelve years in medical training. The discipline of radiology focuses on virtually every part of the body and covers all medical conditions.

Most TRA radiologists are fellowship-trained in specific sub-specialties such as pediatrics, neurology, mammography and interventional radiology, and are considered experts in these specific areas.

Many TRA radiologists have expertise and extensive training in the following sub-specialties:

Interventional and Neurointerventional Radiology

Interventional and Neurointerventional Radiology is the use of image guidance to perform minimally invasive vascular and non-vascular procedures. Compared to open surgeries, these types of interventional procedures generally are with less risk, pain, and cost, and typically have shorter recovery times. Vascular techniques including angiography, endovascular stenting, embolization and thrombolytic therapy. Non-vascular procedures include biopsies, drainage of abscesses/cysts, feeding tube placement, vertebroplasty, and radiofrequency ablation.

Interventional Oncology

Interventional Oncology is a sub-specialty branch of Interventional Radiology. Interventional Oncology further bridges the diagnosis and treatment of cancer by using diagnostic imaging techniques to perform targeted and precise treatment of benign and malignant tumors located in various organs of the body. Interventional Oncology treatments may be offered in combination with many oncologic therapies. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, our service will work in close collaboration with referring providers to design the optimal treatment plan to help take care of these patients from the initial clinic consult through post-treatment care and re-staging.

Pediatric Radiology

Pediatric Radiology is a sub-specialty focused on neonates, infants, children, and adolescents. Pediatric Radiologists use all imaging modalities with specific training in the different diseases and psychosocial needs of children. Special consideration is employed when children undergo examinations, particularly when there may be exposure to radiation, with established stringent protocols.

Body Imaging

Body Imaging focuses on all areas of the body except the head/neck, spine and musculoskeletal system. It is further divided into sub-specialty focuses in diseases of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, and cardiovascular system. Body Imaging covers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services, including conventional radiography, CT, MRI, US and fluoroscopic procedures.

Breast Imaging/ 3D Mammography

Breast Imaging/3D Mammography uses the most effective techniques available, such as Computer Aided Detection technology, for the early detection of breast cancer. All imaging services are digital and include 3D Mammography, Breast Ultrasound, Breast MRI, Needle Localization, aspiration, and Ultrasound-Guided or Stereotactic 3D-Guided Breast Biopsy.

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Imaging

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Imaging uses MRI, high speed CT, nuclear medicine imaging, and PET imaging to diagnose heart diseases including congenital malformations of the heart, coronary artery disease, and inflammatory conditions of the heart muscle. Other specialized exams assess cardiac viability after a heart attack, and non-invasively study the arteries supplying blood to the body.

Emergency Radiology

Emergency Radiology is used on acutely ill and injured patients seen in hospital Emergency Departments. Such services include CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and digital imaging. TRA offers emergency response services to twelve area hospitals, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Musculoskeletal Radiology

Musculoskeletal Radiology uses cutting-edge technology, including MRI, CT, radiography, fluoroscopy, and ultrasound, coupled with sub-specialty expertise to assist referring physicians in the diagnosis and management of their patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology focuses on disorders of the brain, head, neck, and spine. Neuroradiologists diagnose and evaluate tumors, epilepsy, trauma, degenerative disease and cerebrovascular disorders including stroke, carotid stenosis, aneurysm and vascular malformation. A wide range of imaging techniques are used, such as carotid and cerebral angiography, myelography, discography, spinal injections, as well as CT and MR angiography, perfusion and spectroscopy.

PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine

PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine exams are safe imaging techniques used to diagnose, and to sometimes treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancer, heart disease, and other abnormalities within the body. Small amounts of radioactive materials called radiopharmaceuticals or radiotracers are used to visualize the structure, and analyze the function of the different organs and systems of the body.
